For over two decades, Mary has served in various roles at Simpson including Shelter Manager and Day Shelter Coordinator. In 2005 she was selected to launch Simpson’s scattered site housing program for single adults who’ve experienced long-term homelessness in collaboration with St. Stephen’s and Our Saviour’s homeless programs. Serving close to 30 men and women, the SARA program used Housing First and Harm Reduction approach philosophies. The amazing success of those first participants led Simpson and partners to expand the effort, eventually forming four teams that serve almost 300 single adults, known as the Collaboration of Housing Resources (COHR) team. She believes everyone has the right and ability to maintain dignified housing. This has been demonstrated repeatedly in the journeys of the people she has served.
A graduate of William and Mary in VA, Mary started working with people in homelessness in Minneapolis starting in 1988 with her work at St. Stephen’s shelter. Prior to that, she worked as a lay volunteer serving people in poverty in New Jersey and Missouri before spending close to 3 years in a small town in Guatemala. She and her son are both avid sports junkies, and enjoy tennis, basketball, biking, and hiking, as well as annual family vacations to music festivals and sunny beaches.
Mary has over 20 years of experience in the Social Services field and has been at SHS since 1999.
